FIRST GRADE

First grade is a lot of fun at Christ Our King-Stella Maris School! Students are learning fun stuff in every subject and get to feel like big kids in their classroom and at their desks! They get to go hands-on with their lessons on the classroom SMART Boards, they get to use iPads from COKSM's mobile iPad cart, and they get to do reading buddies with the 5th grade students!

Not only that, but the first grade curriculum is always centered around big thematic units. These units come together in the most ornately decorated hallway in the entire school! Our first grade teachers put forth some amazing effort to turn their hallway and classrooms into a wonderland of imagination and adventure that is sure to capture the attention of each and every student that enters! To top off the fun, 1st grade students have a Thanksgiving feast, put on a Christmas play, and take a polar express trip to the North Pole!

Christ Our King Stella Maris School has been a part of my life for MANY years!  I graduated from this school and proudly became a parent volunteer when my two daughters went here as well.  I later worked as a substitute teacher until I became a full time 1st grade teacher.   I have an Allied Health degree along with my Elementary Education certification.

My goals for my students include helping each one achieve his/her full potential academically, spiritually, and socially.  I am both honored and proud to be a part of this wonderful school and school family.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

I am always proud to tell people that my children and I are graduates of Christ Our King - Stella Maris School (though the school was called Stella Maris School at my time). I am even more proud to tell people that my 3 grandsons are here at COK-SMS. This year I will begin my 26th year as a first grade teacher here and I still feel so proud of our school. It has been a special part of my life and I hope that all who call Christ Our King-Stella Maris School their school feel the same way.

SECOND GRADE

Second grade is a very important year for the spiritual growth of students at Christ Our King-Stella Maris. This is the year that students prepare for their first Sacrament of Reconciliation and their First Holy Communion. The children spend a great deal of class time throughout the year preparing for this very important and very memorable milestone!

In academics, students begin practicing their cursive handwriting! They also learn about world geography, work with multiplication and division, begin reading chapter books, and explore many fascinating branches of science! It is truly a year filled to the brim with new and exciting activities, ideas, and skill, but it's also a lot of fun!

I was born and raised in Mt. Pleasant and attended Christ Our King- Stella Maris School. My family moved to Florida, and I attended Florida State University and graduated with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education.  I then moved back to Charleston because I have always loved this town! I am now married and have two beautiful daughters.

As a teacher, I strive to make learning fun while also setting high expectations!  My goal is to have all my students enjoy coming to school and be excited about learning new things!

FOURTH GRADE

Fourth grade is a busy, busy year at Christ Our King-Stella Maris. Students participate in a huge range of activities that challenge them academically, physically, and even financially!

Students in fourth grade take part in Move Across America to track their fitness throughout the year and learn about the United States at the same time. When they aren't busy running, they are busy reading the newspaper to keep track of their money in the Stock Market Game where they compete to earn the most profit against teams from across the state. As if that weren't enough, fourth graders then help protect the environment by managing the entire school's recycling program!

But that's not all! Students will participate in reading buddies with the kindergarten students, math club with the older students, and are even eligible for the upper school Lego Robotics teams. All-in-all, it is good to be a fourth grader at COKSM!

I hope to ignite a passion for learning in all of my students while fostering their growth as caring, responsible, and confident Christians.

FIFTH GRADE

Fifth grade at Christ Our King-Stella Maris School is a very important year. Students are no longer in elementary school, but they aren't quite yet in middle school. It is a year of transitions, challenges, personal growth, and a whole lot of fun!

One of the highlights of fifth grade is the Barrier Island Field Trip to Camp St. Christopher. Many students list this at their favorite memory of COKSM in their 8th grade yearbooks. Students will spend three days learning about wildlife, exploring the environment, examining bugs, playing in the mud, and creating great memories and lasting friendships!

It is also the first year that students get to participate fully in our middle school iPad initiative. Students in fifth grade are given the use of a personal iPad both in and out of the classroom. It comes with great responsibility, but each year students rise above and beyond our expectations and produce some truly amazing and creative work!

But it's not all fun and games! It is also a lot of work. Students will write full-length papers, give presentations in front of their peers in all subject areas, dissect animals, manage a vegetable garden, help out with our 1st grade reading buddies, learn difficult material, and take challenging tests. By the end of the year, students will have pushed themselves harder than ever before and will be truly ready to head into middle school!

I am married to Norman Russell and the proud mother of six grown children and grandmother to seven beautiful grandchildren. We moved to the Charleston area twenty years ago, and I have been teaching at Christ Our King-Stella Maris School for the past nineteen years. I believe in Catholic education, and I was fortunate enough to have my youngest three children attend COK-SM as well.

My own philosophy and the philosophy of the school complement each other. I believe that children learn best in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable. My classroom is a safe zone where students are able to be themselves, learn, and grow while being challenged. I foster an environment where love of God is top priority and on a daily basis we practice respect and service for others.

I completed my Bachelor degree in Elementary Education from Glassboro State University and my graduate work from College of Charleston.
