Where Tradition & Innovation Unite
RESOURCE & SCHOOL COUNSELING
Our Resource & School Counseling Department works hard to ensure the academic and social success of each and every student at Christ Our King-Stella Maris School. Our talented staff provides academic assistance, customized education plans, counseling, mediation, and more. All staff members are at the school full-time and are eager to help students and parents, so be sure to contact them with any concerns!
The Resource Department offers academic support to students with documented disabilities in math, reading, and/or written expression. Based on the psychological report, we are able to determine what level of intervention we can provide to help the student be successful.
The services we provide are meant to assist the student in the least restrictive environment. Some services are consulting with teachers or modifications in the testing environment. We also are in classrooms to assist with instruction. More intensive services are provided in a pull out model in the resource room.
If your child is struggling in class academically, please speak to the teacher to help determine if resource would be the appropriate next step.

Classroom Guidance Sessions: will take place in the 4K-4th Grade classes once a week lasting 30-40 minutes a session. The exception is our action-packed First Grade classes who will meet with the counselor once every 3 weeks. Classroom lessons are aligned with South Carolina’s Standards.
Small Groups: Small group counseling sessions may be offered to students throughout the school year, based on student need. This type of counseling environment allows students to give and receive help from their peers who may be experiencing similar feelings or situations. Here is a list of small groups that may be offered this year.
Friendship Social Skills Study Skills Anger Management Grief/ Loss
Group sessions typically last anywhere from 4-6 sessions and are made based on teacher or parent referrals. Sessions will take place at an agreed upon time with the classroom teacher when minimal instruction is missed. Any child may participate in group sessions, with parent permission first. If you have any questions about group counseling, or would like your child to participate in a group, please feel free to contact us!
Individual Counseling: Individual counseling at the school level seeks to remove any barriers or concerns that may be getting in the way of a student being the best learner that they can. Should a student need on-going therapy, a referral can be made to an outside mental health provider. Individual counseling referrals for students can be made through the request of a student, parent or teachers.

Lower School Reading Intervention
Earning a bachelor's degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and a master's degree in literacy from the University of Akron, I began teaching elementary students in 2002. I am extremely proud to head Christ Our King-Stella Maris School's reading initiative. Here, I support classroom teachers in differentiating their reading instruction to meet the needs of each student. In addition, I work with small groups to provide research based literacy interventions to ensure that all our students become successful life long readers.
