Got a tablet or laptop to use at school? It's cool if you follow these rules.
Dear Parents,
First I need to answer a question that many of you have asked. That question is “Does my child need an iPad or a tablet for school?” The answer is a resounding “NO!”
Having said that, let me add that I am aware that many students are already using them for taking notes and have downloaded some of their textboooks to their tablets. At this point students in the second semester of grade four and up will be allowed to bring tablets if they have them. As a faculty, we see the great advantages that these tablets present, but as an administrator, I want to be sure that we take the proper steps to implement tablet usage in school. I have advised the teachers that all lessons are to be designed so that anyone, with or without a tablet, can participate. We know that the future is coming at us at a lightning clip, and are trying to be proactive and not reactive.
We have come up with a basic policy for the use of tablets in school. My goal for technology is to get tablets for the teachers so that they can learn how to use them and design wonderful, 21st century lessons. We had been considering a pilot program for 8th graders, but can now see that we have already gone beyond that. We have determined that as of now we will allow students to bring their own devices if they have them. Let me reiterate that the students in no way NEED to have them. We have put the new Tablet Policy on our website. If your child will be using a tablet in school, you and he/she must sign the pledge to follow the stipulations. These policies may need to be refined and updated frequently.
I realize that in a year or two, probably all textbooks will be downloadable to a tablet. It could mean much lower costs for books, and certainly lighter loads on the backs of students.
Please read the tablet policy from our website. Download it, print out the Pledge page and bring it to the office before February 1, 2012. In order to have a tablet at school, the pledge must be signed by both student and parent and must be on file in the office. Violation of the policy will result in our rescinding the privilege of using the tablet in school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Moschella

COK-SM Named IB World School!
Last night just after school was dismissed, we received an important message from the Director General of the International Baccalaureate organization in Geneva, Switzerland. The letter addressed to Mrs. Moschella informed us that the IB Organization had voted to authorize Christ Our King-Stella Maris School as a full IB World School, effective immediately.
Our school is now only the second Catholic middle school in the United States to offer the IB programme. Congratulations to all the teachers who have worked for over four years in making our school prepared for membership in the IB programme. We look forward to next year as our first full school year as an IB World School and welcoming the rising sixth grade class as the first group to complete all three years of the programme.
We look forward to a special celebration to honor our exciting accomplishment soon with the Bishop and Monsignors Carter, McInerny and Moczydlowski. Mrs. Sandra Leatherwood, the Assistant Superintendent of the Diocese of Charleston was on hand this morning to personally congratulate the students, teachers, Mr. Kelly, the IB coordinator, Mr. Oleksiak and Mrs. Moschella. Mrs. Leatherwood challenged us over four years ago to make COK-SM an International Baccalaureate World School, so it was very fitting that she visiting us this morning.
